Westwood Volunteer Fire Department Announces
2009 Community Service Scholarship Winners


The Westwood Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce that Westwood High School graduates Patricia Taylor, Ceili Brennan, and Jamie Viapiano have each been awarded the Department’s Community Service Scholarship for the college academic year beginning September 2009.  Each scholarship is paid to the student and is to be applied toward tuition, room and board, fees and books.  The scholarship award is based on scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and community service and was presented by Department Chief Marc Fedorchak at Westwood’s June 23rd Mayor and Council meeting.

Fire at Blimpe Sandwich Shop Print E-mail

Blimpie FireFire crews were dispatched at approximately 5:15 a.m. to 700 Broadway for a fire alarm and sprinkler activation. Police units arrived on scene and advised responding fire personnel that there was a heavy smoke condition coming from the Blimpie sandwich shop. A crew from first due Engine 12 stretched a hand line into the front of the store and discovered a small fire that was being contained by an activated sprinkler head. The fire was knocked down and crews checked for extension and ventilated the building. The Blimpie store sustained minor fire damage along with water and smoke damage. Two adjoining units, a bank and a GNC store, also sustained water damage. On scene: Engine 12, 14 Truck, Engine 16. Chief 15-1 was incident command.
 
Crews Stand-by for Suspicious Packages Print E-mail

Fire crews were requested at around 3 p.m. by the Westwood P.D. to stand by near the K-Mart parking lot when two suspicious briefcases were found in a shopping cart. The Bergen County Bomb Squad responded to the scene and used a robot to investigate the two briefcases. Upon investigation, the briefcases were found to contain blank cassette tapes. Units were on scene for two hours.

 
Mutual Aid House Fire in Washington Twp Print E-mail

One Engine Company was requested to respond to Washington Township Fire Headquarters while they were at a working structure fire at 330 Hickory Street. Engine 16 responded to their Headquarters before being redirected to the scene to go to work. Crews from Engine 16 assisted with interior and exterior operations. No injuries were reported. The family cat was rescued but their dog perished in the fire. Click here for photos.
 
Service Tech Burned while installing Oven Print E-mail

Service Tech BurnedA service technician installing an oven at 67 Whalen Court was burned after a leak in the oven's gas line came in contact with a stove top pilot light, igniting the area he was working in. The technician, although burned, was able to put out the fire using sink water and pots. Upon the Fire Department's arrival, the fire was knocked down. Crews checked for extension and ventilated a smoke condition from the house. The technician was treated by medical personnel.
